Whitley Castle near Alston
Through Natural England''s Higher Level Stewardship Scheme permissive footpaths have been created to link the South Tyne Trail and Railway with the Pennine Way. The permissive footpath also passes a Grade II listed 17th century Bastle. Bastle''s were fortified farmhouses built at the time of the Borders Reivers. The Bastle has been consolidated with a grant from Natural England to preserve it for future generations. Open access has also been provided on Whitley Castle Roman Fort, one of the best preserved Forts in the North East. It is thought that this Fort was situated on the route of the Maiden Way, a Roman road between the Brough/Penrith road at Kirkby Thore, near Appleby, and Carvoran Roman Fort on Hadrian''s Wall.
