The Down near Bishops Castle
This open access site at The Down is a permanent grassland field that has a large mound in the southern corner of the field which is the remains of a medieval motte castle with the foundations of a sheep keep. The low earthworks to the north of the motte indicate the buried remains of a small medieval settlement,
This Scheduled Ancient Mounment (SAM) is being restored and managed through Environmental Stewardship to protect the historic interest of this site through scrub management and a restricted grazing regime.
The site is within easy walking distance of a Forestry Commision site called Bury Ditches is home to one of the best preserved hill forts in the country, dating from about 500BC.
