Country Walk Summary

North Demesne Alnwick near Alnwick

The North Demesne is part of an extensive area of landscaped parks and pleasure grounds developed from medieval deer parks around Alnwick Castle (familiar to Harry Potter fans as Hogwarts School), the seat of the Percy family since the 14th century. The parks cover a tract of countryside almost encircling Alnwick. The landscape is a contrasting mixture, with high heather moorland and rough crags of the Northumbrian Sandstone Hills sweeping down to the improved pasture along the wooded Aln valley. The parks exploit the boundaries of these distinctive landforms where rugged moorland gives way to pastoral, rolling land by the Aln. In the west parklands the river is confined between hills and in places has incised deep, narrow valleys while in the east the landscape is more open.
